Scales: a film by Shahad Ameen

Nahla Tabbaa, an artist in residence at MMAG, invites you to a screening of the dystopian fairytale Scales (2019) directed by Shahad Ameen. Set in a fishing village whose inhabitants heavily rely on the sea, the story tells of a sinister ritualistic practice, with daughters being offered in sacrifice to the creatures of the sea in return for an abundant fishing season. This feminist genre fable is a story of resistance and rebellion, how ancient rituals still inform contemporary environments and that nature is truly a beast.
