The Spectacle

The artist invites her cosmic friends to a film screening entitled Cinema al-Vitrina. The film is screened over the span of a few earthly weeks corresponding with the month of September of the year 2026 (humans of the earth have a simplistic appreciation of time). This film shows events that never take place again, ever, occurring during an earthly timeframe parallel to universal time spans that stretch and bend beyond infinitum.

The cosmic-creatures watch the film from behind a transparent galaxy-separating-glass pane. The events of Cinema al-Vitrina are staged on one tiny point in this vast universe perched on the edge of a street suspended at the edge of a mountain overlooking downtown Amman, on the planet Earth. Meanwhile, street side, Earthly humans are granted the rare opportunity, available for a very limited period of time (three Earth-human weeks = a cosmic blink of an eye) to see the cosmic creatures.

The artist cannot predict the moods of her friends, nor their impressions of the film. Should the screening generate any awesome or awful cosmic vibrations, the humans of Earth may experience them as a galactic message: a strange lick of cold, a flash of lightning that lasts slightly longer than usual, the return of the dinosaurs from vacation, or the end of the world.

Diala Khasawnih is an Earthly human who was born at Al-Ma’shar Hospital, later demolished. Nudged along by hormonal changes and, consequently, moral/emotional unruliness, the artist found herself flirting with new species of friendship and reconsidering the meanings of reality and imagination.
