Letters to her
13-31 July, 2023
Letters to Her' was held as part of the launch of in bold and italics: سرديات, and considered the complex themes around the concepts of home and motherhood. This project aimed at dissecting the interconnectedness between the self, womanhood, and the womb/رحم, which translates into the Arabic root word, mercy. The conversation between the works of visual artist Tala Sadeeq and researcher Sara El-Jazara navigated the complexities of exploring one’s inner child, the healing processes that come with attaining this understanding, and the fears associated with a mother’s presence and/or absence.
In her previous work, Tala Sadeeq attempted to break the borders of our realms with her paintings, depicting a lost history of the previous occupants of our spaces. With time, she realized the effects of this work on her life and the traits and traumas that were repressed within them, resulting in a marked shift in her work and style. Now focused on the process of healing, Tala recreates early childhood drawings on larger scales in a collection named 'Letters to Her' dedicated to herself, her mother, her grandmother, and other female figures in her life.
Sara El-Jazara is interested in further exploring and probing modern and contemporary Arab art histories. She has experience working with art collections at Fornaciai Art Gallery in Florence, Karim Gallery in Amman, and Artzotic, an online art gallery. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in art history from Marist College in Florence.
