La Nouba Des Femmes Du Mont Chenoua: a film by Assia Djebar

Jad Dahshan, an artist in residence at MMAG, invited audiences for a screening of La Nouba Des Femmes Du Mont Chenoua, a 1977 film by Algerian writer and filmmaker Assia Djebar. Straddling documentary and fiction, the film follows its protagonist Laila as she revisits her native Chenoua to interview women elders about their experiences during the 1962 liberation of Algeria from French occupation. The film intervenes in colonial and masculinist archives of war to explore generational memory, oral testimony, and the role of women in the resistance movement.
